What is SEO?

What is SEO, and how can you increase organic traffic to your website?

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the careful cultivation of increased visitor traffic to a website, through unpaid means such as analysis of key words and visitor search terms. Good SEO makes a website visible to a search audience with the right keywords, at the right time, to increase traffic to the website and to improve a website’s standing with the search engine. SEO also increases a company’s ranking in Search Engine Results Pages, or SERPS. When people visit a website, their “traffic” is monitored and prioritized by the search engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.). The search engine determines, through mathematical algorithms, which results to list first when a visitor types in search terms. For example, if a visitor searches for “where to find the best outdoor sushi downtown,” the search engine will deliver results based on which sushi restaurant has paid the most attention to these kinds of key words. Typically, this means that the sushi restaurant with the best “SEO” will show up first in the list of results – meaning they have loaded their website with the most key words possible to deliver the exact results back to the visitor’s search terms. So, a restaurant with the key words “outdoor” and “downtown” in their website should show higher in the results than a restaurant who simply says “best sushi” on their website. While this is free, and many entities do it on their own, others hire SEO consulting firms to help them increase their SEO. This type of marketing effort is often called “organic” because it is typically grown with the search engine rather than purchased through Paid Search advertising.
